Kam and Christina recently toured the beautifully renovated facilities in Normal owned by Arcadia, and met someone truly remarkable along the way.
Lena, a 92-year-old resident, was sitting in her apartment crocheting a blanket for an active service member when we arrived. During our conversation, we shared that a family member is currently serving in the Army. Without hesitation, Lena asked the building manager to retrieve a blanket from her closet and said, "This is for your nephew to thank him for his service." 💜
Lena has made more than 1,000 blankets for active-duty military members and veterans over the years. She does this as a way of expressing gratitude to the American soldiers who liberated her during World War II. As a young girl in Romania, Lena and her brother were given a chance at a new life because of those sacrifices and later immigrated to the United States.
Did you know? Having a sense of purpose and giving back to others is linked to improved emotional well-being, stronger social connections, and healthier aging. Lena is a beautiful example that it's never too late to make a difference.
